Addison Knox HomeBox Program

Residential Knox Boxes

The Town of Addison participates in the Knox rapid entry system. A Knox HomeBox allows firefighters and police officers to quickly access your home during an emergency without forcing entry and causing property damage.
All Addison fire engines and three police units carry Knox master keys that allow them to access Knox boxes registered to Addison.

How to Get a Residential Knox Box

Step 1: Order Your Knox Box
Visit the Knox website and order a Knox HomeBox (Residential Knox Box).
Residents should enter the installation address during the ordering process so the box is connected to the responding emergency department.

Once it arrives, the box can either:
  • Hang on your door, or
  • Be permanently mounted near the entrance of your home.
Installation instructions are included with the box.

Step 4: Contact the Fire Department
After the Knox Box is installed, contact the Addison Fire Department so firefighters can come to your home and place your house key inside the box.

Step 5: Secure Your Key
Firefighters will unlock the Knox Box using the department’s Knox master key, place your house key inside, and lock the box.
Once secured, the box will only be accessible to emergency responders with the Addison Knox master key.

What Is a Knox HomeBox?

The Knox HomeBox holds a single house key that firefighters can access during emergencies such as:
  • Medical emergencies
  • Fires
  • Natural disasters
This allows emergency personnel to enter quickly while helping prevent damage that can occur during forced entry.
